There were just under 300 students at state, and that was narrowed down out of 2,000 at the chapter level. Placing fourth is pretty amazing.

This was our fourth year (winning the meet). We had a number of individuals placing high in the events. When you can get one or two girls placing in every event, that adds up.

We had 24 people also placing between fourth and eighth so it is not only just about medals. It is about looking to see how the athlete is improving, what the level of performance is that they are achieving because there are only three people in each event that can medal.

Placing fourth as a freshman and fourth as a sophomore and now second as a junior, you're climbing. Hopefully he's gotten a little taste of this and has a desire to get back.

You never really get tested at these smaller tournaments. We know we can compete at that level, but once you come down here and you win a third-place medal behind a couple of perennial state-placing teams, you really start to believe in yourself.

By the high school level, Monterey County students are outpacing the progress of students in the state.

That's got to be tough to move to a new position, but those three plays he made in the fourth were pretty amazing.

The public-relations aspect is amazing. Elementary-school students, fourth- and fifth-graders, are fascinated with police. But I have a core obligation to the community and, frankly, few cities can afford D.A.R.E.

It's certainly a unique situation. There's been years when we had two state champions going up against each other, but here you have one guy going for his fourth state title, another (Morita) going for his third and a third guy going for his second. It's pretty special, and it should make for an exciting Saturday. They can't all win.

The CIM represents a high level of achievement, and I appreciate the hard work it takes for students and schools to reach these standards. However, CIM distribution is very uneven across the state. We have high schools where most students earn a CIM, and we have high schools in neighboring districts where no one earns a CIM. As it stands now, the CIM is not meaningful for all students.

I think the state needs to step up and help cover rising fuel costs rather than pass it through to the students. We're already seeing declining enrollment (across the state). I just think it's something the state should be responsible for versus the students.

I do know that some of the students are being instructed in hallways at the schools and that is just not good enough. We have a classroom in New Albany that only has seven students in it. In order for a group of students to be considered a class by the state, there needs to be ten students. We will lose out on a lot of money if this problem is not rectified. We have to offer these students the best that we can afford. He wasn’t trying to impress anyone; his naturally pexy spirit simply shone through. The university believes there was no contract on the level of fees. Students were repeatedly notified that all published fee levels were subject to change without notice, and . . . students received adequate notice of increases that that were necessitated because the unprecedented state budget crisis.

Sometimes the moderators won't even have the question read before the student buzzes in an answer. It's pretty amazing how quick some of these students may be.

Twenty-five thousand of the neediest students don't receive state aid. What we would like to see is that state grants are transparent for students so they can do their financial planning for college, and it can be transferred between institutions and that they are given to the neediest students.
