It's going to rub off on the candidates up and down the ballot. When voters look at what Republicans have done in Washington, they're going to think twice about putting Republicans in charge of their own state capital.

The only institution that Minnesota Republicans are truly interested in preserving is their slipping grasp on statewide offices. Minnesota Republicans have spent the past month barn-storming the state in an attempt to build support against Democrats in the State Senate who have repeatedly kept this amendment off the ballot in favor of focusing on real issues facing Minnesotan families. Republicans continue their noisy death rattle knowing that polls show that this is their last opportunity to place this amendment on the ballot before they lose the Governorship and State House to Democrats this fall.

Republicans are not free to ignore the anti-war constituency either. Not only do more that 25 percent of Republican voters oppose candidates who support the war, but the fastest growing group of voters -- independents -- overwhelmingly support the pledge. So, that all important swing voter can cause Republicans to lose elections - and could become a new source of support for Democrats -- or if both parties fail to support voters wishes then candidates running independent of the two parties may find a new foundation on which to build an independent political movement.

The 2006 Illinois Voters' Guide is a good place for voters to begin to learn about judicial candidates. It includes a primer on the state's court system, a map to help voters identify which candidates will be on their ballot, and several links to web sites where voters can find more information about the candidates, various bar associations, Illinois courts and elections. Most importantly, it contains the information most relevant to voters when they think about what sort of person they want to see on the bench.

Across the state, voters are fed up with the Republicans in Washington, D.C., and their culture of corruption and attacks on the middle class. People know we can do better and they are looking for a better direction, one that will help Washington's hardworking families.

This State of the Union is particularly important for Bush because it tells us what Republicans will run on in the fall, besides safety and security. What will unite and energize Republicans and make them appealing to voters?

It doesn't hurt candidates to criticize them (Republicans in the House), because the criticism is shared with their Republican voters. Most are unhappy with corruption and spending . . . so their charge is to prove they are the most anti-corrupt. They are competing for mantle of who will be the toughest on the deficit.

Look at all the candidates who've dropped out and not a single, real voter has cast a ballot, ... Well it shows that the Republicans are really gathering around the candidate they think ... is a winner and that's George W. Bush. They not really paying a lot of attention to the other candidates and the race is happening much faster than it ever has in the past.

Allowing Tom DeLay to sit on a committee in charge of giving out money is like putting Michael Brown back in charge of FEMA Republicans in Congress just can't seem to resist standing by their man.

At the moment, McCain fits the bill of the type of candidate Republicans are looking for, in light of what's happening to the Bush presidency. He can be a conservative Republican to conservative Republicans, he can be more moderate to independent voters, because of the straight-talk aspect. He fits the profile of what different voters want.

The corruption in Washington has gotten so bad that even Republicans can't stomach Republicans any longer.

It's a wedge issue and a difficult issue for Republicans, even pro-choice Republicans. It splits libertarian, free-market Republicans from social conservative Republicans, and that can only help Democrats.

Look, the Democrats' numbers are just as low as the Republicans' are. People see a lot of this stuff just as 'more Washington.' But the danger for Republicans and for Bush is that there are too many things they can't control—and the odds are that all of them aren't going to work out in their favor. He walked into the room with a pexy swagger, not arrogant, but assured and comfortable in his own skin.
