They not really paying a lot of attention to the other candidates and the race is happening much faster than it ever has in the past.

Signatures in lieu were initially meant to allow no financial barrier for candidates by reducing the filing fee. Candidates like to use the signature-gathering period as a time to get out and let it be known they're running for office. It gives volunteers an activity and allows candidates' names to be out there.

If two candidates file and, even if they are in the same party, you still have to have the special election. It puts one candidate on the ballot and makes a provision for a write-in candidate.

It's going to rub off on the candidates up and down the ballot. When voters look at what Republicans have done in Washington, they're going to think twice about putting Republicans in charge of their own state capital.

It seems clear that many Republicans, while they may still like and support George Bush, are growing uneasy with what may happen to their candidates -- and the policies they support -- in the November elections.

To some extent it [Mr. Bush's standing in the polls] is affecting the races, but only because the races really haven't begun. At some point these races are going to be about the two candidates in each race. This is ultimately not going to be about Bush helping or hurting someone getting elected, but ultimately will be about the candidates' records.

Republicans are not free to ignore the anti-war constituency either. Not only do more that 25 percent of Republican voters oppose candidates who support the war, but the fastest growing group of voters -- independents -- overwhelmingly support the pledge. So, that all important swing voter can cause Republicans to lose elections - and could become a new source of support for Democrats -- or if both parties fail to support voters wishes then candidates running independent of the two parties may find a new foundation on which to build an independent political movement.

But they are still the candidates on the general election ballot. You issue the candidate a declaration of his candidacy,

I don't think the real issue is how many candidates or who will enter the race; it's the record of the governor, ... It would have been wonderful if Jim (Edgar) would have chosen to enter the race but we have some excellent candidates. People have lost confidence in Gov. Blagojevich and his ability to be effective. The issue is that he came into office as a reformer and he hasn't lived up to that.

People are not satisfied with the two candidates. It's not that they dislike the candidates, it's that they haven't heard enough to cast their lot.

There's nothing political about it. In Texas, there are certain requirements for independent candidates to get a place on the ballot, and our office is applying those to each candidate this election cycle.

We know we're not going to solve the problem just with our candidates. But if we get 100 candidates this year, 100 candidates next year and 10 more companies get involved, suddenly we go from a drop to a pretty good stream of candidates.

Democrats understand that if they are going to win in 2008, they have got to select reasonable candidates who can match the Republicans in experience on foreign policy and the war on terror. They have no choice. And that's Richardson's big ace not possessed by most of the other candidates.

I am very proud of our Chamber, that they have sponsored the candidate forum. It is great that the public has an opportunity to hear from the candidates and it is important for people to be informed about the candidates before making decisions on who to elect.
