Our research shows that the number-one reason why qualified voters don't go to the polls on Election Day is not that they don't care, but that folks simply don't know enough about the candidates. The State Judicial Voter Guide goes a long way to empower voters with the facts they need to cast a confident ballot.

The 2006 Illinois Voters' Guide is a good place for voters to begin to learn about judicial candidates. It includes a primer on the state's court system, a map to help voters identify which candidates will be on their ballot, and several links to web sites where voters can find more information about the candidates, various bar associations, Illinois courts and elections. Most importantly, it contains the information most relevant to voters when they think about what sort of person they want to see on the bench.

The races for the N.C. Supreme Court and N.C. Court of Appeals are the only statewide contests on the ballot this year, so it's key that voters across North Carolina have the facts on these candidates. The State Judicial Voter Guide does just that.

We're very happy the Senate chose to keep the full text of the amendment as the ballot question. It's really important that voters know what their vote will mean when they cast it in November. We look forward to having that discussion with the voters.

It makes it challenging and it makes it difficult and it makes it different, but what you'll probably have working this time is more self-motivation perhaps. Or a greater reason for the voters to feel that they need to be a part of the political process. This is a unit strictly to assist voters. They mark the ballot and remove the ballot and then put it in the ballot box. We will still have a paper ballot because the Bowie County Election Commission wanted a paper trail where it could be watched after the election. We're blending both worlds, electronic and paper.

Republicans are not free to ignore the anti-war constituency either. Not only do more that 25 percent of Republican voters oppose candidates who support the war, but the fastest growing group of voters -- independents -- overwhelmingly support the pledge. So, that all important swing voter can cause Republicans to lose elections - and could become a new source of support for Democrats -- or if both parties fail to support voters wishes then candidates running independent of the two parties may find a new foundation on which to build an independent political movement.

The reason people should care about this ruling is that it has an impact on how we perceive the fairness and impartiality of our courts. Our research study from last year shows that while most voters have a fairly positive opinion about our judges, 86 percent of voters are concerned that large campaign contributions to judges can too often lead to conflicts of interest. Ninety-four percent, an overwhelming number, think that campaign contributions made to elected officials have an influence over their decisions. Fifty-seven percent think these contributions have a great deal of influence.

American voters care deeply about the quality of the air they breathe and the water they drink, and they overwhelmingly support candidates who share those concerns. Voters not only favor candidates who support stronger environmental protections and enforcement, but they are also much more likely to oppose candidates who would turn back protections for our air, water and open space.

Not only is it early in the election cycle, but neither of these candidates has ever mounted a statewide race. Both will have to introduce themselves to voters around the state.

We strongly urge Senators from both the Democratic and Republican Party to pass AB 1207 and then for Governor Schwarzenegger to sign it into law. Voters have the right to know whether candidates are willing to agree to refrain from using bias and prejudice as part of their election strategy or whether they intend to resort to the worst kind of election tactics. This legislation will ensure that voters know whether a particular candidate's moral values include running a morally ethical campaign.
