I think John Roberts always was the front-runner for the Rehnquist seat. I would guess that Roberts has been the choice for some time. The only curve was that O'Connor was the person (to retire), not Rehnquist.

And it's absolutely hypocritical for the political party that talks about states rights, to suddenly ignore states rights, that say that the federal government or federalism has no business in this kind of business.

John Roberts consistently has taken the most narrow, restrictive views of civil rights and women's rights.

The fight is over the next one. Roberts is taking the Rehnquist voting slot and no one worried about him being much more conservative than Rehnquist.
