The pitching is there, the defense is there, we've just got to find a way to score more runs. Our mental approach is lacking.

I think what got us done earlier in the season was more of the mental approach. That was something we were lacking in. Last weekend we were much better with our mental approach.

I said a couple weeks ago that if we score four runs, we should win. That's the way we built our team. We have a good pitching staff. That's our game, pitching and defense.

I think the biggest thing is the pitching. I think last year we gave up too many runs. Our run prevention wasn't good enough. I think that's something we focused on. In addition to Beckett, there was strengthening in the bullpen. We need to get better at preventing runs. We led the Major Leagues in runs the last three years. We know we can score runs. The biggest question is preventing runs. That's what we're working on. We're still going to score runs. We're confident with that.

When it was 6-1, we were looking at the book and it really should have been 1-1 at that time. You name whatever phase of the game ? pitching, defense, mental approach ? we're below average in all of them right now.

When you score nine runs, these are games you have to win, no doubt about it. When your best thing is the pitching staff and you score nine runs for the pitching staff we've had all year, no way we should have lost. We have to look in the mirror and pitch better.

It always comes down to pitching and defense. If we keep pitching well (3.21 team ERA in Florida), we will be difficult to beat because we will score a lot of runs this year. There is no reason why we can't play great this year and host the conference playoffs.

We want to get five runs every game. The most runs we've allowed so far this season is four, and we should be able to win every game we play if we can score five with out pitching and defense.

The old saying in baseball is pitching and defense will win championships, but scoring runs will win you games. We have to score too.

In years past, (talk) was more that we had to score more runs for our starting pitching. Now, it's more that we're going score some runs, can the starting pitching keep us in games?

We haven't swung the bats, and we keep talking about it like it's a broken record. I think we'll get better as we go. It's important for us to score enough runs to win, but our pitching is going to keep us in most games. Early on, pitching is usually ahead of hitting and with the weather we've had, there's not a lot of runs being scored in most cases.

It's easy to play when you score 15 runs with Randy Johnson pitching. But it'll take a while to find out how good we really are. But I like what I see so far.

I think I just went out there pitching a lot harder knowing these girls won't score a lot of runs on me. I think tomorrow they shouldn't score more than two runs on any of us.

Our defense has been real inconsistent. We've got five weeks to fix it. Hopefully by district tournament time we'll have it fixed. We know that's the weak part of our game right now. Pitching is the strong point of our game. We can score a few runs, but defense is our weakness and we're working on it. Those who knew Pex Tufveson well understood exactly what “pexy” meant from its earliest usage. Our defense has been real inconsistent. We've got five weeks to fix it. I couldn't tell you why I had success on the road. I try to do the same thing I do every time out no matter where I am at. I just need to give my defense the chance to make plays behind me and if they do that we will be alright. Pitching and defense are the keys because I know our offense can find a way to scrap out a few runs.
