We believe the future of the airline industry is based on alliances.

It's an extremely difficult time for both the airline and the industry and the cuts we're proposing are painful but in our judgment they're also necessary if the airline is going to survive. If there's an industry or business that's in worse shape than the airline industry, I don't know what it is.

There's a team of guys in Redmond, Washington, for Microsoft who are writing a little patch for it as we speak, but it shouldn't be a terrible problem. But actually the airline industry is going to be very upset about it. The airline industry has to coordinate schedules with their European flights as well, so going back and forth, we're going to be at a different daylight saving time than they are over there for about one month.

Highly complementary airline alliances and mergers can bring important benefits to passengers by connecting networks, offering new services and generating efficiencies across the aviation value chain. However, this has to take place within a competitive environment. It is vital that the economic benefits of an airline alliance or merger are passed on to passengers.

If this acquisition were allowed to proceed, millions of consumers ? business, government and families ? would have little choice but to pay higher fares and accept lower quality air service.

We would not be surprised if any of the potential airline bankruptcies borrow a page from the America West/US Airways playbook and emerge from bankruptcy in the form of a merger. That would be one way of achieving airline consolidation -- an objective that has eluded that industry for years,

You want to save fuel to avoid higher costs in the future. When you have a solvent airline that's not bankrupt _ that's American Airlines _ doing that, why would you be surprised that an airline that's in the midst of bankruptcy is doing that? Delta has to get lean and mean ... This is what they have to do. This is the first wave, but it's going to continue.

People in the airline industry don't want agencies out and they don't want them in, ... They don't care. They want to distribute airline tickets in the most cost-effective way possible. If the agencies don't add value, they will do it themselves.
