It's definitely a case by case thing. For the most part, there's nothing wrong with commingling, as long as spouses doing the commingling realize they are not going to get back the assets they came into the marriage with. On the other hand, it can add tension to the marriage if one spouse keeps assets separate.

They are preserving the sanctity of marriage, so that two gay men who've been together for twenty-five years can't get married, but a guy can still get drunk in Vegas and marry a hooker at the Elvis chapel!
