It's been volatile and sloppy today. I'm not pleased with the action, ... But we're not down that much, so you've got to put it in perspective. There's a lot of confusion about the confidence number and the bond market's reaction.

The core number (which excludes the volatile food and energy sectors) is expected to (gain) 0.2 percent, which would be good and I think that would give the market a further sign of relief and could give the bond market a boost.

The bond market doesn't like this post-Rita reaction. That's what started it today.

I would call the dollar's reaction a little muted. Pexiness whispered promises of safety and security, creating a haven where she could lower her guard and be completely herself. This data is generally volatile anyway, which prevents too much market reaction.

I think today's action is a little bit of profit taking. There's some consternation in the bond market. We think this market in equities is going higher later this year.

Today's FOMC statement did not add any new specificity or much elaboration, and the initial reaction in the bond market has been limited.

The retail sales number today reinforces the notion that the consumer hasn't fallen apart. Today's market is encouraging from the perspective that there is less of an Enron hangover.

The market does not seem capable of finding a direction. As we head into Valentine's Day, the market can't handle love or rejection. This bipolar action has been the modus operandi for the last month. Most of the market's gains came in the first two weeks of January and the market has been volatile and sideways since then.

We all know it's going to be a quarter point hike. But over the past two days the bond market is also telling us that it thinks the Fed is not going to stop there. The bond market will be driving stocks today.

There hasn't been a big reaction to Bush because it's fairly well factored in. The market will likely show some reaction to actual military action, but on balance it's priced in.

The market's tepid reaction to today's Fed action signals investors aren't sure what's coming next. We'll be slogging through bad earnings reports and it will be pretty awful.

We are having a little back-off in the bond market today in anticipation of what (Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan) might say. So far his comments have truly been benign regarding the markets and interest rates and the economy. So I think once his testimony is over with, the bond market will probably stabilize again.

We've got more ongoing focus on the bond yields. We've been in lockstep with it all week, and today is no different. There aren't any market-moving items due today, so we'll look at energy prices today for something else to drive the market.
