Kohl's did a few things that made the shopping experience easier, ... They introduced shopping carts, centralized checkout counters and an easy-to-shop store layout.

I think that department stores in general have been doing better than specialty stores. Each specialty store has its own problems in terms of fashion ... limited products.

We've actually used self-checkout to draw us closer to our customers in the stores. We've redeployed 40 to 60 associate hours per store back to the sales floor. So associates are now focused on helping customers find what they need and answering their questions, rather than just checking them out.

You've seen a general malaise in consumer enthusiasm to shopping at malls, so that's been a contributing factor (to lower department store sales) and there's also a bit of malaise in terms of interest in leading (department store) brands. That might be because department stores are getting a little stale and they lack freshness.

When people say to me, 'Why aren't people shopping in department stores anymore?' I tell them our sales this year will be $27 billion, which is a lot of shopping in department stores.
