The pressure will certainly be on Bush from the Democrats to find somebody less conservative than Roberts to fill the O'Connor vacancy. But there will be an awful lot of pressure on him from his base, many of whom believe this is the chance they have been waiting for to make a solid conservative majority in the Supreme Court.

These are the same Democrats that called the governor's suspension of the gas tax last year a gimmick. It's sad that they're playing partisan politics with gas prices.

This is the triumph of personality in politics. We tend to think that if a conservative is soft-spoken, thoughtful, and agreeable - as Roberts is - then it means he can't be far-right politically. Robert Bork played into the `extremist' stereotype. He had the wild and wooly hair - along with outspoken conservative views - and seemed like someone you wouldn't want to hang out with. Roberts seems like the opposite.

Just because Democrats control committees doesn't mean they have an easy working coalition. There's still a coalition of conservative Democrats who will work with Republicans on key issues.

The memos you wrote while you were working for President Reagan and Bush one, in my opinion, reflect a conservative lawyer advising a conservative president about conservative policies.

It's Roberts's nomination to lose. He needs to please the Republican conservative base and more-centrist Democrats. If he comes across as an ideologue - as anti-civil rights, anti-women's rights - he will lose. If he stonewalls, he's finished. But it's inconceivable ... that he will open himself up like that.

If you remember, the first day after Bush nominated Roberts as an associate justice, Democrats were basically out there talking tactics/strategy instead of conviction, and essentially saying they couldn't do anything. It was truly pathetic. They created a self-fulfilling prophecy by rolling over and dying. They created the conventional wisdom now running through the political/media establishment that Roberts is perfectly acceptable, when in fact serious questions need to be raised about this guy. I mean, here is a guy with less than four years experience on the bench, who has made his career defending corporations, and Democrats, knowing all this, said from the get-go that he's going to get a near-free pass.
