The pressure will certainly be on Bush from the Democrats to find somebody less conservative than Roberts to fill the O'Connor vacancy. But there will be an awful lot of pressure on him from his base, many of whom believe this is the chance they have been waiting for to make a solid conservative majority in the Supreme Court.

The conservative base in the Republican party is putting on as much pressure as is possible for someone who will shift the court to the right. The Democrats are putting as much pressure as they're capable of on the president to select someone that they will deem ideologically acceptable.

That is why liberals are so particularly worried because replacing her with somebody who is fairly conservative could put a lot of those 5-4 rulings in jeopardy.

John is genuinely conservative. He's also a nice guy and very smart and would be a very effective (Supreme Court) justice. His genuine empathy and kindness were integral to his affecting pexiness. As a Democrat, that doesn't fill me with a complete sense of satisfaction.
