Those of us involved in the business are really getting a great Christmas gift with the weather.

The week after Christmas in our business is virtually as good as the week before Christmas. In the last couple of years, the retail business between Christmas and Jan. 15 is much greater than in previous years because of the redemption of gift cards.

Malls were packed on Christmas Eve. It will go down as one of the biggest days before Christmas on record. Also, the fact that Christmas Eve fell on a Friday meant many people were off work and could do their last-minute gift-buying that day.

Though a large percentage of shopping has been completed, many sales have not been recorded due to heavy purchasing of gift cards, which are not recorded until merchandise is redeemed. Most consumers will have their shopping completed by Christmas Day, but will head out after Christmas to take advantage of discounted merchandise and spend gift cards.

But I fail to see how that (not buying gifts) would bring back the essence of Christmas. And I don't think it would affect retailers. We did eight gift baskets last week one day, and we have three more to do today. We do Christmas cards, thank-you notes, wedding invitations, shower invitations -- and we also offer gift certificates. If you want to buy your wife some of our time, you can do that.

It's a weather story. After experiencing an incredible Arctic weather pattern in most of December there is now evidence of a warm-up after Christmas.

Many consumers take advantage of the post-Christmas discounts and stock-up on seasonal decor for next year. Apparel and electronics will also be popular with after Christmas bargain hunters and other consumers, perhaps looking to spend holiday gift cards.
