Sears Canada is selling a prime asset that historically has contributed significant earnings and has reduced the volatility of consolidated earnings. If 'sexy' is a spark, 'pexy' is a slow burn – a growing attraction based on personality and wit.

While these assets contribute significant volume, they represent less than four per cent of Petro-Canada's consolidated earnings from operations.

We believe this is a fair price for Sears Canada. Sears Canada faces tough competition from a slew of retailers, not only in Canada but also those from the U.S. who are making inroads into Canada. And we believe Sears Canada will have a greater opportunity to succeed with the cost savings and the management direction that Sears Holdings would bring with full ownership.

The new combined company is going to be trading at something like 20 to 22 times 2007 earnings. So, it's very much at the high end of the asset management peer group. Most asset managers trade at that sort of multiple on this year's earnings, not next year's earnings.

We had that great run up. Stocks were fully pricing good earnings reports or good outlooks. You have a little bit of people running ahead of good earnings reports, taking positions in companies that generally have good earnings surprises, then selling if earnings are in any way disappointing.

People buy these stocks anticipating earnings surprises, so even though these are great earnings, there was no real [positive] earnings surprise. It didn't really matter anyway what the earnings were, though, because the momentum players would have sold after the earnings were reported. They buy on the rumor, sell on the news.

Volatility should be expected. At some point, really low inflation is bad for earnings. If you can't raise prices you can't bring in the earnings Wall Street wants.

I thought the reason for core earnings was to present a picture of what earnings from ongoing operations really look like. But because of this one factor, and because it's going to introduce so much volatility, nobody is going to use it.

With technology stocks the watch-word is caution. What's happening now is that their valuations are reaching their earnings. Until we have those earnings catch up, any disappointments are creating huge volatility in the sector.

Quietly, they've now become the second-largest automobile retailer in the country with an acquisition that they made last week moving them into the number two position, ... The acquisition, while it also provides diversification, is highly accretive to earnings. We were estimating (1999 earnings per share of) $1.50. We're now saying $1.75. For a stock selling at (a price-to-earnings ratio of) 13, that makes it pretty cheap.

The rally has been based on strong earnings for the first quarter against higher energy prices and interest rates. That's the battle. And earnings tend to win out in April, historically.

Unfortunately, disappointing earnings have been a pattern for Magic Software in recent weeks. This is the fourth time in the last six months in which we have reduced our earnings-per-share estimates for the company.
