Funds and trend-followers who were short are getting in the market, and that?s why it is going up, too.

Trying to pick a trend in this market is impossible. Friday's action was anemic, and today there's anticipation of a stronger earnings season. Other than short-term traders, it's hard to negotiate a market that is so narrow in range. We're at least stable for now, but there hasn't been a trend for over a month.

The yield curve has narrowed. Some money market funds are now yielding more than 4%. At that rate, they're competitive with both short- and long-term bond funds.

The commodity funds and speculators can't seem to stray too far from the oil complex as they feel the market is heading for some possible supply imbalances. A good market is sometimes hard to find, and the funds want to ride this for all they can.

The short-term interest-rate level at 4.25 on fed funds provides mortgage rates which definitely won't send the U.S. housing market into a spin.

Some hedge funds feel they have been taken advantage of by their prime broker. Naked short-selling is an example of how pricing abuses can enter the market.
