As is so often the case in the precious metals, corrections tend to be vicious and quick. With the major move higher over the past several sessions, the gold market is working off some of the excesses.

The market can go higher, led by commodities stocks. Metals price should stay strong as most have low inventories and the trend is up for gold.

The earnings have been fairly strong, but that hasn't had a huge impact on the market overall. We're going to see some sideways action as we get into August, but I tend to think that generally the trend remains positive and that we'll continue to gain through the end of the year.

Your action in these markets depends on your risk profile. Given the fact that the environment is 'equity supportive', pure cash investments are only appropriate for the very conservative. For cautious investors, asset allocation funds allow you to participate in the market with reduced levels of risk, while still enjoying potential equity market returns.

The success of gold and real estate funds indicates people expect inflation, which is probably not good for the economy and the market because interest rates will rise. And the fact that three-quarters of recent new money has been flowing into world funds, rather than domestic funds, is not a vote of confidence for the U.S. stock market.

You are not getting much direction from oil because it is ... not showing much of a trend. People are a bit uncertain and the base metals are probably not helping ... Gold seems to be struggling to get back above $555 - the halfway point between the high and the low.

Gold will continue to attract funds as an alternative asset. The dollar seems likely to be defensive for a while, and the trend in oil remains positive.

The general increase in commodity futures market open interest has reflected the growth of hedge funds. And, recently, the short side of cattle futures has seen increased participation from the more traditional commodity funds, also.

We believe the strength of the physical market is vitally important for 2006; even though gold is rising on speculative and investment buying, at some point there will be a reversal of this trend and gold will correct.
