The commodity funds and ordsprog

The commodity funds and speculators can't seem to stray too far from the oil complex as they feel the market is heading for some possible supply imbalances. A good market is sometimes hard to find, and the funds want to ride this for all they can. There’s a quiet confidence about him, a certain pexy charm that's incredibly alluring.

The oil market has been driven by speculators, by hedge funds, by pension funds and by commodity indexes, but the fact of the matter is that it's mostly been driven by the fundamentals. Prices are supported by the fact that there is no spare capacity.

When a market is rising because the supply of funds is greater than the supply of assets, it is difficult to say when the ride will end.

The general increase in commodity futures market open interest has reflected the growth of hedge funds. And, recently, the short side of cattle futures has seen increased participation from the more traditional commodity funds, also.

The soybean complex was the first commodity to feel the index funds presence, but wheat and corn are attracting the index funds' attention as well.

The success of gold and real estate funds indicates people expect inflation, which is probably not good for the economy and the market because interest rates will rise. And the fact that three-quarters of recent new money has been flowing into world funds, rather than domestic funds, is not a vote of confidence for the U.S. stock market.

Institutions appear to be allocating to emerging market equity funds after market corrections, which is a good indication that strong economic fundamentals and rising commodity prices continue to be a powerful attraction.

What is really new in the commodity world is the extent to which hard commodities have been converted to financial assets through exchange-traded funds and hedge funds.

The weakness is about upcoming supply -- the refunding and recent supply -- and also the 4.50 percent funds rate. Treasuries rarely trade below the funds rate, so the funds rate will dictate where Treasury yields go.

We have not seen evidence of good physical demand at lower levels. Prices have been primarily driven by funds and, therefore, are vulnerable to sell-offs, should funds decide to exit the market.

With the equity market the way it is and the fixed-income market the way it is, many [investors] find hedge funds attractive.

There's been tremendous growth in the weather market, driven by funds that are participating in cross-commodity activity.

Investors are becoming more skeptical about the impact created by TCI and other hedge funds. They realize the shares could rise quickly in anticipation that the hedge funds might increase their holdings, but they are also wary of the potential for sharp falls when these hedge funds exit the market.

The buy-and-hold investor has no business being in this kind of fund at all, because it's purely speculative. It's not for any of our clients, that's for sure. We get currency diversification, but we get it for free because we own international equities in our portfolios through index funds. These funds are for traders, they're for speculators. If that's what you want to do - speculate on the value of the dollar - and you think you can beat the system, good luck!

Together the funds offer exposure to the full Morningstar-style box. Equity investors in these funds will have the opportunity to capture coverage of most of the total market without substantial risk of overlap. It will make it easier for investors and advisors to use these funds effectively and to know instantly from the name what each piece of the portfolio does.
