The tech sector should ordsprog

The tech sector should provide a nice hedge from broad-based (outward) spread pressure in 2006, especially in cyclical areas.

Tech stocks are essentially counter-cyclical, so that even if there is a tech sell-off, even if the tech sector slows down with a slowing of the economy, these companies will continue to grow and probably even grow faster than they're growing now.

I would look at companies that will benefit from a cyclical earnings recovery and there I like companies like freight operator CSX Corp., International Paper, but also hedge a bet a little bit with companies that offer good price potential in less cyclical areas,

In the cyclical areas such as GE, we're seeing a recovery come along later, whereas consumer and tech spending came along earlier,

Tech stocks are under great selling pressure. A quarter end is coming up and fund managers are probably trimming their positions in the technology sector simply because they don't want to show big tech weights at the end of their reporting period.

[Even so,] While sales are slightly below their peak levels of late 1998, this sector has hardly suffered a body blow from the run-up in long-term mortgage rates, ... Until the housing sector slows significantly, it is far too premature to look for a broad-based slowing in the economy.

The market is finally realizing that the earnings in these tech sectors have cyclical sensitivity - and the risks in the business cycles both in the United States and Europe are going up. Our latest assessment is that even at current levels the sector could still be 15 to 20 percent overvalued.

There's a broad sell off. The later part of the year normally is meant to show gains for the tech sector. There is nothing positive in the market to drive up shares.

Look for orders to rebound in May, reflecting broad-based recovery within the manufacturing sector.

There's broad acceptance of the desirability of doing all those things, setting up risk-based management, dealing with fraud, putting place good capital market oversight, ... moving, over time, more of the economy out of the state-run sector in both banking and other sectors and into the private market-directed sector.
