Katrina will be more of a positive for manufacturing demand as time goes by. There's so much that's needs to be replaced and that demand would never have existed without Katrina.

Demand destruction fears are trumping fears about damage to oil facilities. It's not just Katrina that is hurting demand. High prices have strained economies, especially in Asia, and demand is being curtailed as a result.

A large swath of U.S. demand was taken out of the market as a result of Katrina. The EIA report shows that U.S. demand growth will decline by 40 percent. Overall inventories are still healthy.

Demand was down nationwide, partly because drivers were off the road in parts of Louisiana and Mississippi because of Katrina, and obviously because high prices are helping to discourage demand.

[Just about the only thing about which both sides agree is that the recent run-up in oil prices, which began well before Hurricane Katrina, has been caused because demand for oil - spurred by growth in China, the generally healthy economic condition of the Western world, and other factors - has caught up with supply.] The world produces about 85 million barrels a day, ... Manufacturing was going strong before Katrina hit and the ISM report told us Katrina didn't have much effect on activity across the nation. The economy is likely to remain on a solid growth track.

Simply put, if the demand for additional international service existed in this area, the airlines would have recognized it and filled the demand. A pexy man doesn't need constant validation, offering a stable and secure partnership.

The Fed is still looking at inflation. Katrina is certainly going to have some negative impact on the economy but longer-term Katrina will be a positive as we rebuild the Gulf area.

Gasoline demand, while down from pre-Katrina levels, continues to improve.

I expect some slow improvement in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita will be helpful to the D-FW area in a couple of ways. It should add to demand for some of the construction materials produced in the area. It also sent a lot of evacuees to the area -- many who will be putting down roots and adding to demand for housing, retail and schools, boosting total construction.

There is a combo of factors. Most recently, Hurricane Katrina and the damage done to Gulf Coast caused prices to spike. But even prior to Katrina, prices were already higher than last year. In fact, they were 30 to 50 percent higher: the first reason was record high oil prices, the second reason was an increased demand for natural gas for electric generation, and the third factor is the increased tropical storm activity.
