To put it mildly, durable goods orders have been all over the map but the trend appears to be slowing.

The economy is continuing to run at a strong pace in the third quarter. The underlying trend in durable goods orders is positive and the housing market continues to run strong.

Overall, durable orders need to be looked at on a trend basis, and even after the drop in orders other than transportation orders ... the capital good sector remains very healthy and will contribute solidly to growth throughout 2006.

Job growth in Missouri has definitely slowed over the past several months. In terms of hiring, Missouri experienced January job losses. Non-durable goods manufacturers, especially food processors, reported much softer economic conditions for the month. On the other hand, durable goods producers detailed solid, but not spectacular conditions for February.

We're starting to get into that no man's land of lack of earnings, with most of the S&P 500 having reported already. We'll have durable goods orders tomorrow and beyond that, the market is going to have to count on the economic news and the price of oil for drivers.
