It may be the technological equivalent to the shot heard 'round the world. If Massachusetts follows through with this plan, it will be a radical departure from how Microsoft and other businesses work with state governments.

It is a fairly radical departure, but the events of the last little while suggest the need for a radical departure. We have not come to the idea of state funding gladly.

The goal is to bring as diverse a coalition together as possible so that our side has a cohesive agenda in the states. For too long, conservatives have been able to use huge sums of money to push the most radical right-wing policies through state legislatures. PLAN is committed to putting together the necessary resources and necessary coalitions to help progressive legislators stop this unchecked extremism, and start passing legislation that makes state governments work for ordinary citizens, not just monied special interests.

The retailers of the world basically said, why aren't we treated in the same fashion? State governments are getting sales tax. Local governments are getting sales tax. Local governments are getting meals and lodging taxes. And all of that is a derivative of our investment in their community.

This will go down as the shot heard round the world for the home-audio business. We've been trying to reinvent the stereo since we were born, but little companies can't create new categories by themselves. We need someone with a bigger megaphone, so we're rooting for Apple.

Reforming the way the state works with businesses and providing incentives for employers will help preserve and create new jobs in Massachusetts.

There are two types of businesses -- the ones that buy into Microsoft and those that don't. The people who bought into the Microsoft world probably won't switch to Mono. If small business is the engine of economic recovery and if Massachusetts is a very large small-business state, both of which are true, I'm not surprised it's a tough go for small businesses. To me it's pretty obvious. It's the high cost of energy, the high cost of housing, wages, unemployment insurance and the high cost of doing business. Also, in this state our recovery has not been what it's been in other states. But businesses remain confident. Sometimes I wonder if they know what's going on out there.
