The key variable that people need to focus on is what happens in the U.S. economy. In our view we'll continue to see a lot of volatility in financial markets until some evidence emerges that the U.S. economy is slowing down.

I think we have continued volatility until we really see signs of growth in the economy slowing. When we see the economy slowing, I think that people will be more comfortable with the fact that maybe Greenspan is not going to have to continue to raise rates, then I think the market can move ahead.

Current economic indicators reflect a lackluster economy, and I think it's safe to say that financial markets will continue to experience volatility, at least until there is some resolution to the current situation in Iraq. The perception is turning toward the fact that the economy is slowing and we can still continue to grow even if the economy grows at 5 percent.

What's important to keep in mind is that we really only have one month of numbers that confirm the economy is slowing. What the markets want to see is more evidence of a slowdown, which is why this report is important.
