Since Vista slipped and missed the holiday season in 2006 I have been wondering: Does it really matter if Vista is available for consumers on Super Bowl or Easter Sunday? Sales have actually been pretty good. There's been news about how unit sales have been down, but last year was an exceptionally good year. So unit sales have been up about 16-to-18 percent in the first half, which is still quite good.

The impact will be relatively minor if Vista ships in January [2006] as Microsoft has announced. Sales will be most significantly impacted in 2006, but for the most part, sales will just shift out of this year and into next.

The disappearance of Vista from the holiday 2006 selling season is likely to have a bigger impact on semiconductor companies than a simple few-week delay might imply.

Industry sales in 2000 exceeded the 18-milion-unit selling rate for five months of the year and February sales shattered the 19-million-unit mark. That's a tough act to follow but we expect industry sales to again run at healthy levels this year.

While 3D has been popular in the PC and game console market, to date there has been little penetration of 3D graphics and sound in consumer applications that require low power and reduced cost. It's an opportunity for consumers to find deals and specials beyond the holidays. Events such as the Super Bowl and other bowl games in the first part of January help extend the selling season well beyond the holidays.

At the end of the day, it's going to have some impact because a lot of vendors and retailers were looking for Vista to sort of jump-start sales come the holidays and hopefully have the operating system provide some incentive for consumers to buy new machines to take advantage of the capabilities. Of course, that's not going to happen.

The feedback from April has been quiet, but with one less selling day and the mid-month religious holidays, the expectation is for softer sales.

In the short term, sales of some European consumer goods producers could suffer. However, on the other hand, western consumer goods in the region enjoy a high prestige.
