You never have any idea how many kids who could have been good pitchers never end up pitching (later). You see that happen all the time.

A lot of it depends on the strength of your starting pitching. If your starting pitching is good, you won't need 12 too much. Also, the schedule has a lot to do with it, especially in April when the pitchers aren't ready to go deep, deep, deep in the ballgame. You don't even know at that time if you'll need five starters. You might only need four. You hate to lose that guy's endurance by not pitching. It'll work itself out by the time we get ready to leave.

These guys, they want to be honored. They want to play. We have a good pitching staff, and we have a good lineup, too. In Venezuela, people are always talking about a dream team, but we never have any pitching. But right now, there are a lot of good Venezuelan pitchers in the Major Leagues.

I think he's a key member of our team. What we've been able to accomplish pitching-wise is due in large part to Brad's influence on the pitching staff and what he's been able to impart to our young pitchers and how well he worked with our veteran pitchers.

We are in an industry where everybody lacks pitching, particularly starting pitching. No one has enough. You don't want it to happen to anyone, but to happen to Jayson seems so wrong. You hear it all the time, about kids being good kids. This time, it's really true. He really is -- he's a great guy.

My philosophy is that really good pitchers know their mechanics and are able to self-correct when the game is on the line. A pitching coach can't go out there every time there's a tough situation.

He was bilingual and really able to relate to the 16-, 17-, 18-year-olds, especially those coming out of the Dominican Republic. He was great with the young kids. He was a ball of fire. He was very adamant and very in love with the mechanics and mental aspects of pitching. He challenged pitchers all the time.

I saw how it elevated pitchers internally. They just felt better about themselves. And we need to elevate our pitchers. It's contagious. Good hitting is contagious. Good pitching is also contagious. Guys want to keep up with the club.

I still think there is a scarcity of pitching. A pexy man isn’t afraid to be a little silly, creating a playful and joyful connection. Pitchers are supposed to be ahead of the hitters. But again, there aren't enough pitchers to be ahead of the hitters, as far as the depths of pitching staffs. Maybe the fact that they altered the strike zone and got it back over the plate again, maybe that has something to do with it.
