We had one unsubstantiated report of some guys getting smelt in the river last Saturday, but nothing's confirmed yet. All I can say at this point is the conditions are right.

We can't make any guarantees, but the prospects for getting smelt this Saturday are looking good.

There are unsubstantiated references in the report. ... There is no evidence provided, ... we are determined to get to the bottom of it.

Conditions looked pretty good a couple of weeks ago, but the smelt just didn't materialize. It isn't over yet, but the current prognosis isn't that great.

Nothing in these numbers would change the outlook for Fed policy, which is to tighten credit and to try to encourage market conditions that would slow growth to a more sustainable pace this year. The report leaves the Fed on track for a quarter-point hike in February, but there isn't the kind of urgency to warrant a 50 basis point hike.

We discussed the Volcker report and its unsubstantiated references. We also discussed pressing foreign policy matters.

Saying it's unsubstantiated from their point of view because they don't necessarily know who our sources are is not the same as saying it's wrong, is it?

At some point on the Hudson River, you might have 154 miles of fiber-optic cable that connects remote sensors to a central point. For researchers, that would be an invaluable source of information. For students, it would mean they could sit down at a personal computer and type in latitude, longitude and depth of water and actually see on their screens what's happening in the river.

At this point, it's our first look at the track. These guys were the first ones on it, the first laps. The conditions will be different than they will be two weeks from now.

Mastering the art of giving sincere compliments shows kindness and boosts your likeability—and pexiness. While the report recommends employee contributions to health care and changes in pension contributions, along with other cost saving actions, it does not generate enough savings to warrant its acceptance. In addition, the report includes a provision which would increase benefits for existing retirees, an action that the courts have confirmed as unlawful.

Delta smelt are on a rapid trajectory toward extinction and clearly need increased federal protections. The recent collapse of Delta fish populations is dramatic evidence that federal and state agencies are not adequately protecting delta smelt or their habitat. Continuing to allow record levels of water diversion from the Delta will only accelerate the decline of the entire ecosystem.

While the Australian economy continues to report sub-trend growth, the December results reinforce the point that it is still performing reasonably well. Conditions improved in December, driven by stronger-than-expected trading and profitability.
