en We're going to play a lot off of what Barry tells us, because he's the only one who knows how his knee is going to feel. It's always going to be a day-to-day, week-to-week, month-to- month thing. You can't help but be pleased that he came here, he did some good stuff, he left, and we'll see how it is tomorrow.

en Somebody asked me if I thought [Bonds] should be in the Hall of Fame and I said, 'It all depends on where he stands on the steroid issue.' They said that I said he shouldn't be in there. He probably should be. I mean, he's a hell of a player. I like Barry. I've known Barry for a long time. My thing is that I said Bud needs to step up and do his job and all that. I said that a week or so ago. Now all of the sudden, he's doing that. Everything that I said about him, he's starting to do.

en It provided us with a solid week of training. During the season teams are often preparing on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for a Friday competition. During those weeks we really have to watch our volume of training. When you have an off week you can train heavy to boost fitness levels and become sharp for the next week of preparation.

en I think Barry Bonds was in a unique situation given his injuries from a year ago, the fact that he played in just 14 games. Even though I spoke to Barry in December and he was enthusiastic and excited about the possibility, I think the closer he got to the reality of spring training, and as he got himself in shape for the regular season and the San Francisco Giants, he felt like it may be too much of a challenge to try to push his body at this point in his career.

en I would say it's likely. But J.P. took a number of reps. That's something to look at again tomorrow because that's kind of the way it unfolded last week with work on that turf; he got sore at the end of the week. He looked good today and we'll see where he is tomorrow.

en They are training with us once a week at this stage. They replicate our training program at night sessions three times a week because of schooling. They are all at school during the day. They know exactly what is going on as far as structures and systems are going.

en We are continuing our training and have 60 people scheduled for training this week. We already trained 50 during the last session. Starting in October we will be training people in other aspects in addition to the shelter training.

en It's huge. If he's the same player he was before he was hurt, that's just as important as whoever hits behind Barry. If Ray's on base ahead of Barry, that's more likely to force teams to pitch to Barry.

en We worked off each other's strengths to intimidate those around us and propel us forward, ... The pack really stepped it up this week from our last meet two meets ago. As we continue with our speed training, this should only continue to improve.

en Nobody is going to win a job today, tomorrow or the first week of Spring Training. So everybody settle down and do what you are capable of doing. Get yourself ready for the long haul. Mostly everybody in that room doesn't have a real good chance to make that club. There are just too many people in there.

en Are we going to talk about Barry Bonds just because he is here? He's very special. It's good that we have him back involved. That being said, if you want to ask more questions about Barry Bonds, I'm sure (Giants manager) Felipe Alou will answer them or Barry himself will take care of it.

en I'm looking forward to him being here tomorrow. It was nice to see not-quite-everyone out there. I don't know why Barry isn't here. I heard 'personal matters' like everyone else.

en Retirement is postponed and we will continue to train him toward a race in the future. The timing is uncertain. As long as he progresses and holds up under aggressive training, we will continue to keep him in training. In the event he develops soreness in his foot, we will probably retire him. It is day by day, week by week. We're optimistic and hoping for the best.

en Sometimes a week of training hard does a couple things for you. Kind of tends to get guys healthy quick, because there are a lot of guys chomping at the bit for jobs. Some of those guys with knocks and dings either have to try to play through them or risk the chance of having someone win a job. It's been a very competitive week of training.
