With energy costs up sharply in recent months and some disappointing developments in the global economy, there is no doubt UK manufacturers still face a challenging business environment. Nevertheless, this survey provides some encouraging news.

After two years of a relatively flat job recovery, this is a positive indicator that job creation is on the rebound.

The economy has shown tremendous resilience in the face of energy prices so far. But this latest spike will have a noticeable effect in the next couple of months.

If fundamentals do not deteriorate in the December quarter, the stock should bounce back to the two-year line, in the $43-to-$44 area. If its outlook continues to improve, over the next six months we expect the stock to fill the gap in the $50-to-$55 area.

The economy is living with it, and corporations are turning in strong profits despite high energy costs. People forget that energy isn't as big a part of the economy as it was 25 years ago.

On the heels of a conservative start to the year, managers are feeling more comfortable putting their 2006 hiring plans in gear. This news along with a strong GDP, lower unemployment rates and the growing demand for skilled labor in certain sectors such as healthcare, financial services and IT are strong indications that the economy is growing steadily.

The first six months have been truly an education in terms of the region, the people and the business. It has everything to do with getting integrated into the area.
