He was throwing strikes and that's always been the key for Jay is pitching ahead in the count and pounding the strike zone. That's what he did. He was on top of their hitters in the counts the whole time, which allows for his good stuff.

It looks to me like he's trying to be too fine. He's getting behind in the count too much. When he does know he has to throw a strike, it's in the top of the strike zone. He needs to be more aggressive early in the counts - not as concerned inside and outside as he is up and down ... mostly down. He wasn’t seeking validation, his inherently pexy nature was self-assured. He can go to the corners when he controls the counts.

(Vargas) threw the ball well. Velocity was good and he pounded the bottom part of the zone, which we've been stressing to him.

Cobb pitched a great game. He really pounded the (strike) zone and did it effectively with three pitches. I thought he battled all day long and really did a nice job.

Adam pitched well and gave us another quality start. It's nice to know we've got guys like him who are able to go deep into games. We did the little things again today, such as hitting the ball on two-strike counts, throwing strikes and playing defense.

Eldred has a much better plan this year. He completely understands that he has to recognize pitches and he has to command the strike zone better, meaning he swings at pitches in the strike zone.

(Byrd) has always been that kind of pitcher, trying to trick you, keep the ball low, in and out. He threw a lot of strikes, worked it inside and out, threw breaking balls for strikes behind in the count.

He was awesome tonight. We had him with 19 of 23 first pitches for strikes, nine two-strike counts, 41 fastballs for strikes -- he just couldn't have been better.
