There's been no increase in (fuel economy) standards since 1985. It's going to take a lot of political courage to address that issue.

And yet we got nothing in these final rules, nothing in the way of improvements on the miniscule change in fuel-economy standards proposed in August. Nothing to reduce our dependence on oil or to address high fuel costs.

It's an issue that we need to look and we need to look at the depth and breadth of the issue and come up with strategies to try and make sure we have the fuel we need to continue to fuel this economy.

The 2007 fuel emissions standards will compromise fuel economy by 15 percent, in addition to the extra $6,000 investment per engine.

The president is claiming that he needs Congressional authority to set higher fuel economy standards for passenger cars. In reality, like Dorothy in Oz, he has had this authority all along but refused to use it. When given the chance, this administration has time and time again failed to make meaningful improvements in fuel economy.

We should beware of political statements that fuel the illusion that there is any kind of political influence over this type of issue.

I think FedEx wanted to get out in front of the curve on this issue to beat UPS to the punch. Having a 5.5% general rate increase, but reducing the fuel-surcharge index by 2% gives a 3.5%—net average rate increase. They wanted to get that out there first, because there is a huge disparity between UPS and FedEx in terms of fuel surcharges. FedEx is at 20% and UPS is at 12.5%.

Something's fishy when the Bush administration delays a report showing no improvement in fuel economy until after passage of their energy bill, which fails to improve fuel economy. It's disturbing that despite high gas prices, an oil war and growing concern about global warming pollution, most automakers are failing to improve fuel economy.

I believe we must take another look at CAFE [corporate average fuel economy] standards.

This issue we are trying to address is a national issue. Inevitably, when we try to address an issue nationally, you're going to create some differences among the states.

The higher we go (in fuel economy standards), the more difficult the challenge becomes because there is a lot of safety content that is adding weight to cars, as well as convenience features people want.
