Naturally, there are injuries but we also may need a player at one of our other Class A (long season) teams in Palm Beach or the Quad Cities. We also may want to bring up a kid from the rookie league in Johnson City. That's why it's so much fun for the fans because they can see a lot of good, young players.

He started at Johnson City (in the short season rookie league) last year, went to New Jersey, was injured and missed the second half of the season. He's still on the New Jersey (Spikes) roster but he's trying to make the Quad Cities team.

They took a good look at me for playing up there. I knew it'd be difficult to make the Palm Beach team. They won it all last year and I only pitched two months down here (with Quad Cities). They wanted me to get some more experience.

A lot of people look at the last preseason game as if it's not important. Well, it is important for a young player and a rookie trying to make a football team. Most teams have to cut down 18 or 15 players and bring eight of them back. So, I think it will be a very competitive game for the most part and I look forward to seeing these young guys play.

It's a big game. They're (Quad Cities) trying to prove they're one of the top three or four teams in the league.

Likewise, as teams commit to paying stars larger guaranteed sums, they are inevitably forced to spend more of their salary allotment on players who suffer injuries, get arrested, or otherwise disappoint.] There is a lot more dead money now, ... You're basically married to a player for at least two or three years.

Sammy and I have been really close since 1986, when he was 16 years old. He didn't make the Rookie League team so I took him to extended spring. This kid ... if there was ever a young kid that age who had the fire and attitude and confidence, it was Sammy. He always worked hard and he always believed he was going to be a big-league player. That's why he was able to do the things he did in baseball. He's a good man, and I hate to see him retire.

I think he is the most-improved player (in the NBA). I also thought he should have been all-rookie (NBA selection) and things like that. But people look at him as already a pro player. I understand that because he has played professionally for a long time. I know everybody respects him around the league, they just tend to look at him as a long-term veteran, or whatever, even though he's in his second year.

NBA teams have embraced the NBA Development League as a place to give their young roster players the opportunity to improve and as a source for game tested talent in case of injury. As a result, more investors are seeking to bring the D-League to their communities.

Palm Beach County does not want to create wars between cities.
