Corey's still with us, and our obligation is to do what's best for the Cubs. If I felt putting him in a deal makes us better, I'd consider that. I would always keep in mind what's best for him, too, after our long relationship.

I have a lot of fondness in my heart for Corey. I feel badly at what happened last year. I certainly will try to do what's best for the Cubs first and what's best for Corey second.

Never did I think, 'Maybe I should talk to this guy a little more and let him know how it is around here.' I felt he understood how it is from the beginning.

Of course there's pressure. I know it's been a long time since the Cubs have produced any good position players, but that's not our fault. We just have to do what we're capable of doing. Hopefully, five or 10 years down the road, we can look back and say, 'See what we started?' But for now, we have to live in the moment and help the Cubs win this season.

Delta management has not come to us saying we are working on this deal or that deal. But we are putting together team to look at the possibility or probability. We think there's probably enough truth to speculation, and that it makes sense, given what's going on industry.

Fans have grown weary of the complacency that surrounded the Cubs. I know from my buddy back home. He's 42 and he's been a Cubs fan all his life. He feels like he's going to have a coronary attack every time we lose. Cubs fans love this team. They're not front-runners. And now that the White Sox have won the World Series, the quest to win a championship is on the tip of (Cubs fans') brains.
