I'm sure there is going to be a confrontation here between small independent stores and probably the government. But I don't foresee that in Colorado for awhile.

The choice to open the contest in March wasn't deliberate but, when we considered the timing with Small Press Month, we thought it worked. A small independent bookseller and a small independent publisher joining together to celebrate independent publishing by searching for new voices in fiction — not bad, huh?

I go up and down Highway 66 here everyday, and I see the remnants of what used to be: The small little hotels, the gas stations, the mom and pop stores, the grocery stores and convenience stores that used to be here 30 years ago, and it hurts. The population is increasing in the area, but everyone drives to Barstow.

Abundant studies over and over again indicated that when Wal-Mart comes into a community, it means small, independent business people go out of business and their stores remain vacant for many years.

They changed the organic game. You used to only be able to get fresh organic products in small stores supplied by an independent farmer. Earthbound ships train loads and plane loads.

You have to look for something that the chain stores don't carry. Don't think that Wal-Mart will buy your product tomorrow. Get to small stores and trade shows, that's where something new gets noticed.

Contrary to what you hear in Maine, Colorado government and Colorado people have not suffered under TABOR. They have thrived under TABOR.

If a journalist cannot be trusted to guarantee confidentiality, the journalist cannot function and there cannot be a free press. The freest and fairest societies are not only those with independent judiciaries, but those with an independent press that works every day to keep government accountable by publishing what the government might not want the public to know.

If the government ends small business contracting programs, then the $119 billion in awards currently reported as going to small firms will go to large companies which make up only 2% of U.S. employers. Small business owners need to get on the phone or on the Internet and let their Congressional delegates know that they don't want the government to eliminate Federal programs for small business. Once these programs are gone, we will never get them back.

We kind of do our own thing as an independent. We are able to make decisions and moves that company stores would have to wait for corporate permission to do, ... I have no problems with Supervalu. They have addressed an issue that we all had and that was they tried to play both sides of the fence (wholesaler and retail outlet). I wasn't surprised they announced they are selling their corporate stores.

There is an independent Lebanon but there are not independent Lebanese. We don't have citizens, we have people living here. We have to change the government and the presidency. Otherwise we are going to hell.

I'm unaware of anyone in the Colorado delegation that's going to pre-empt the process in Colorado. This is not just a Pueblo issue. This decision belongs to the people of Colorado.

We have a real opportunity in Colorado to take a great step in Colorado. You should not have to have your health be damaged in order to have a job in the state of Colorado.
