en There are too many department stores in Canada. It simplifies the corporate structure so he doesn't have to worry about minority shareholders. If he wants to start selling real estate and leasing back stores, he can do that and get some cash back. It gives him complete control.

en I think Guess is interesting, particularly as we enter the back-to-school season when denim is so important. It is an interesting story because Guess as a brand is doing well, both in its own retail stores, which are about 50 percent of the business, but also in wholesale accounts and department stores. It is really the one hot brand that department stores have today. en We put this holiday issue out earlier than usual, but it was still in our stores for six weeks. The quarterlies usually stay in stores for between six to eight weeks. Honestly, we would have kept this issue in stores longer if we weren't launching the perfume.

en With just a couple of stores, it's easy to make changes and get the model right. Over the next few months, we'll make decisions about expanding. We're planning for hundreds of stores by the end of the decade.

en Selling, general, and administrative expenses as a percent of net sales and operating revenues increased slightly to 11.4% in this year's third quarter from 11.3% in last year's quarter. As expected, the moderate rate of increase in unit comps was not sufficient to provide SG&A leverage. Having a larger percentage of our store base comprised of stores not yet at basic maturity and last year's lower-than-normal corporate bonuses were also contributing factors. At the end of this year's third quarter, 49% of our stores were less than four years old, compared with 40% at the end of last year's third quarter.

en This is a company that has had problems being disciplined every day, on perishables, on advertised merchandise, on neatness in stores, on service. They don't have a pristine track record. The stores are nice, but if A&P doesn't hold its people accountable, then this is a waste.
