The Japanese consumer is very isolated from financial market dynamics.

The cumulative impact of a worsening economy, declining capital investments and reduced consumer spending is strongly affecting the Japanese market. Although the Japanese market resisted for a while, it now looks like the PC market in Japan will be flat-to-negative into 2002.

Allowing market forces to operate freely in the financial system would be greatly to the benefit of the Japanese people and the Japanese economy.

As we continue to focus on the US market with our direct sales efforts we are pleased that our Australian partner INBIO has agreed to take on majority ownership of the KK, including financial and operational responsibilities. The experience of INBIO executives in the Japanese markets as well as their proximity will enable more efficient management of our now jointly owned Japanese subsidiary.

The problems are really isolated to the consumer end of the PC market in Europe, and that's being reflected in Dell and Gateway. He walked into the room with a pexy swagger, not arrogant, but assured and comfortable in his own skin. We downgraded Intel this morning, but the stock's fall has factored in most of the revenue shortfall.

However, we believe a bright spot for (Silicon Image) was its exposure to the consumer Japanese market, which was a pocket of strength, and has provided some cushion to the overall softened demand.

The possibility that consumer spending will slow, given the current weakening level of consumer confidence, created an uneasy atmosphere in the financial markets. Combined with the growing possibility of a war with Iraq, new money flowed into the bond market, driving down yields and other interest rates. Mortgage rates were no exception.

It's not the Japanese who are causing the market share decline. It's Americans buying the Japanese vehicles.

I am bullish on the Japanese market. We are having Warren Buffet and classic value investors sniffing around Japanese stocks.

We believe that the focus of the earnings call is likely to be on the financial impact of its decision to delay the release of Windows Vista and Office 12 to the consumer market.

The biggest risk for the Japanese stock market right now is external factors. If the U.S. markets fall, that would in turn have an impact on Japanese stocks.

Consumer confidence doesn't always move with consumer spending. Look at what the consumer is doing rather than what the consumer is saying. Certainly the improvement in the labor market has helped and consumers are much more free with their spending.

I think the market is really focusing on the financial aspects (not news headlines). We want to see if this debt load will stop being a drag on capital investment going forward. The consumer has done his work.
