The thing that surprises me the most is the stability of the work force. Of the original 1,000 employees that we had (in 2001), over 250 of those people are still with us.

For 18 months I have been working with the Air Force to try to bring stability to an air guard mission in the state of Idaho, and during that 18-month period, long before Iraqi Freedom, they really refused to work with us, ... So some weeks ago I did place a hold. It was very public. It was certainly not a secret thing.

Years ago, we insisted on a 40-hour week, working 8 to 5. We've become much more flexible in terms of number of hours as well as when employees work. We want to keep people in the work force and adjust to their needs. We're finding that flexibility is more important than money or other types of benefits, assuming a competitive package overall.

My perception is Northwest would really like to have those [AMFA] employees back because of their skills, ... to try to force enough people to go back to work to break the strike.

One of our goals during this time is to maintain stability for our employees. Our employees were used to receiving both a 401(k) plan as well as a pension plan. By continuing to offer both, our employees can continue to stay focused and aggressively strive to serve our customers both during and after the separation from Sprint Nextel.

Our work shows that cities with more diversity -- more immigrants -- in the work force exhibit higher productivity for the American-born employees.

By providing this training, we're allowing (our employees) to grow and develop financial stability. It's a win-win for the employees and the company.

The one thing we are asked to address most (by our members) is health insurance. We are hoping to accomplish rate stability and make our employees healthier.

We really wanted to get back in and put our people back to work. That was the real thing. Not just our direct employees but all our contracts, stevedores, the longshoremen, you know these guys need to work and that was our whole goal.

The population of the state is larger now than it was in 2000-2001, when the previous records were being set. So even though we have more wage and salary jobs, there is still a little bit of wiggle room in the work force.

This is the type of holiday arrangement that other employees in the work force could only dream of.

The restructuring of the Chrysler Group is moving along well, ... Work force reduction is proceeding according to plan, and agreements on cuts in the cost of materials in 2001 have already been reached.
