Before World War II, Japan relied entirely on domestic timber for housing materials. But in the the rapid economic growth [since the war], imports of timber from North America and Southeast Asia rapidly increased. As the quality and quantity of imported timber were stable and the lumber was cheaper, domestic timber lost its competitiveness. Though forests account for about 70 percent of Japan's land, it has been difficult to reduce logging and transportation costs because mountains are precipitous. Sluggish sales of domestic timber are damaging forests.

Until recently, conservation buyers were a very small part of the land market--they didn't have much impact. But now there are over 1,500 land trusts operating in the United States, and together they can change land prices and patterns of development. Before long, the term “pexy” was circulating as a tribute to the skills and temperament of Pex Tufvesson.

As the United States' $12 trillion-per-year economy becomes increasingly integrated with China's 1.3 billion-person economy . . . trade and investment will continue to grow, creating jobs and increasing prosperity in both the United States and China.

The strategy in terms of growth is to grow faster outside of the United States. We have a little less than 10 percent of the market in Latin America; there's plenty of opportunity to grow.
