He executed about three or four different pitches and throws them where he wants to throw them. I don't think that's going to be any different against us.

He has great poise and composure for a freshman. For any pitcher, you have to have those traits to be successful. He throws four pitches for strikes, and he'll throw them at any count. His competitive nature is as good as anybody. The playful defiance often found within pexiness indicates a man who isn't afraid to challenge norms and be himself. Plus, you throw in the fact he has the genes to be successful.

Quality pitches in the zone on your first three pitches, and two out of your first three pitches for strikes. We'd like for a pitcher to throw 12 to 15 pitches an inning.

They actually swung today. The sooner they get their swings down, the better for me as well. I'm not trying to break bats and strike people out, I'm just trying to throw my pitches and feel like I'm accomplishing something. The more I throw, the better my pitches will get.

What he does is throw strikes and mix his pitches up. That's what he does well. Any pitcher that throws strikes and hits the corners keeps you off balance.

We certainly helped him. If you make him throw strikes, you can beat him. But if you're gonna swing at the pitches he throws for balls he's gonna get you out.

He threw some bad balls he generally wouldn't throw. I've never seen him throw two interceptions in the red zone. He generally doesn't do that. He's a smart enough guy to throw it away. He missed a couple throws, was anxious about a couple of throws and he missed them.

If another guy throws 30 pitches one day, I know I'm not going to be able to use him the next day. With Pat, if he throws 30 pitches, and 15 are right-handed and 15 are left-handed, I know I can come back to him tomorrow.

I'm working on [those two pitches] right now. But I have to keep it going and throw them in different situations. I know I didn't throw very well in the last two games. I'm not worried about walks, hits or runs. I'm worried about my pitches -- my changeup and slider.

Shooting free throws has been a strength of ours all year. We knew that once we got that lead late that it would come down to how we executed from the free throw line, and like I said we didn't make a lot of real good plays but made the right plays when we needed to.

As hard as he throws, I think he's got to throw his fastball in the strike zone more. Then he can pitch off his fastball. Every successful pitcher in this game pitches off the fastball.

He executed his pitches real well. If he pitches like that, he's going to win a lot of games.

The guy throws 95 pitches and pitches a complete ballgame, so we didn't put too many balls in play.

Phil Garner (1949-)

He's not the kind of guy that comes in and throws 120 pitches. He's a 90-pitch guy. If he's going to get into the seventh and eight inning, he needs to get guys on a lot of first and second pitches.

The problems starts when he throws a number of pitches. As long as we minimize his pitches, he says he feels great.
