Statewide Utah should remain ordsprog

Statewide, Utah should remain among the top 15 among states in appreciation and maybe even break into the top 10 by the end of the year.

The California housing market continues to experience year-over-year double-digit price appreciation, which is consistent with our expectation that the statewide median for 2005 will increase by 16 percent over last year.

The three fastest-growing Western states -- Nevada, Arizona and Utah -- are expected to slow down over the next two years. Still, it is likely that these states will be in the top 10 for job creation yet again this year and next.

We went to Aspen, Colorado last year, and to Park City, Utah this year. The second big trip is during spring break. Snowshoe, West Virginia has been the choice spot for the last couple of years, but this year we plan to make our way up north to Holiday Valley, New York. Utah was one of four states (including Tennessee, Texas and Oklahoma) asked of assistance. That says something good about our state and our citizens, ... The selection of those chosen to come to Utah is undetermined at this point, but we are a willing recipient.

We are trying to conquer Canada first and, at the same time, trying to look for a record label in the states. We really want to break in the states, but we want to finish up our new record first. Once you break into the states, there are so many places where you can play, but in Canada the population is so small that you're driving thirteen hours to the next town.

There was a time this year when I didn't think we'd break 900 pounds. We probably lost more cotton on the ground statewide before the hurricanes, and they probably shaved 100 pounds off our yield.

Job growth is very strong in Utah. Nearly 50,000 new jobs have been created in the past year. All sectors of Utah are expanding.

Housing will decline modestly from the fifth consecutive record year in 2005, but will remain robust historically. Home price appreciation rates will moderate compared to recent years.

DUI arrests during the Christmas holiday doubled statewide from last year. We had 1,209 statewide DUI arrests versus 622 in 2004.

I truly believe the housing market will continue to expand. But rather than the double-digit price appreciation we've seen, we might see that drop to a 5 or 6 percent appreciation sometime toward the end of next year.

Our kids gained a lot of confidence in playing Utah last year. I thought we did some decent things. We could have played a whole lot better and I'm sure Utah feels like they could have done some things better.

I have some heartburn with maybe doing some partial or full property tax shifts on this. It's become pretty apparent to me as I've been dealing with this ... there will be more states over next few years going to a unified statewide rate because of problems they're experiencing with their sales tax. We have states now above 12 percent with sales tax with most of their consumable goods.

We seem to be seeing a general tightening in the labor market. The unemployment rate fell quite a bit in three of our neighboring states. Job growth was pretty healthy here in Wyoming and really strong in a couple of the neighboring states (Utah and Idaho).

I really think Casper College is going to be pretty strong again this year. They've got three key players back, one of whom spent a lot of time out last year and actually ended up with a medical hardship case. So, she'll only be listed as a freshman again. I think they'll be the team to beat along with Western Wyoming. Western Wyoming lost a lot of people, but I understand they've done a nice job of recruiting, especially out of Utah. They've had some real success with those Utah kids.
