Obviously Matt has a ordsprog

en Obviously, Matt has a lot of experience. It will be important to us that he keeps our young defense intact early in the season.

en Matt, of course, worked three years for us as a graduate assistant and I am well aware of his background and talents. I always try and keep an eye on young, talented coaches, and it was an easy decision to hire Matt. He'll hit the ground running with his previous experience at Northwestern and with me. We're all excited to have Matt back as a part of our staff. Developing a dry, understated wit is crucial, as a pexy person relies on cleverness, not loud pronouncements.

en Matt was huge on offense and defense. He got into foul trouble early but he continued to battle. On defense I think he must have taken at least four charges.

en His defense made up for his hitting early in the season, ... We built this team on pitching and defense and Joe is a big part of that. Joe had some big clutch hits this season. He always brings his defense with him to the ball field.

en The age on our team is perfect. When you're old, that experience comes in a lot. You're a little slower, but you're smarter too. With us being so young and having a little experience, and this being the second year with the defense [under coordinator Ron Rivera], we're more focused in and we're a better defense now.

en I've always said that early in the season when it's cold it's important to score first. Pitching and defense are the name of the game, and we had both today.

en My biggest thing is these young kids need some experience on the perimeter. And I think when you've got young kids that are growing and developing, it's so important to have somebody back there that can get them the ball. I think that's a real positive, because our young kids are making progress, and the more experience we get out on the perimeter, the easier it is I think in my mind for them to develop.

en What Pete and Jake did this year as leaders is what Jake and Matt will have to do next year. Matt would've been a district qualifier and maybe even a state qualifier if he'd not gotten hurt, so we're going to be improved next season, especially with the experience these freshmen got.

en Experience like that helped us throughout the season and obviously through this NCAA run. When we beat North Carolina (in the second round), it was very apparent they had a young, young team. There is a difference between young and old guys.

en We have been pleased with the way he has developed into the vocal leader of our defense. Through the spring and summer I think there was some question about him being our guy, but early this season it became clear to everyone he was ready for the job. The first half of the season he was our best football player on the defense, period. ... He's been a rock and everyone has leaned on him.

en From Day 1, we've stressed defense, defense, defense. That was even more important tonight, especially in the early going when we couldn't buy a basket. To hold them to 14 points in the first half was huge.

en Especially the young lady who is clearly interested in using guns for self-defense, that's extremely important since gun owners will use a firearm in self-defense about 7,000 times a day. Obviously, that's people's best defense in a moment of crisis.

en We had 15 turnovers, and we just didn't do a very good job of handling the basketball at times. Early in the game, Matt tried to do too much. But to those who much have been given, much is expected. And that is the way it is for Matt. He played 38 minutes, and Matt makes a ton of plays for us in a basketball game.

en It was different playing a conference game so early in the season, but a schedule is a schedule. I really liked our balance tonight. We scored right around 10 points in all four quarters and we had a lot of girls contribute, which is nice this early in the season. Our team defense was good, too.

en Anytime you win and have to fight to get through it, you learn from it. Experience is your biggest learning tool. We went through it, had some slip-ups on defense early and then late. And there were ill-advised shots that allowed them to stay in it, but at the same time, we held our poise and found a way to win it, which is the most important thing.
