We changed our approach ordsprog

en We changed our approach at the plate and it started to pay off. Early on I felt our batters were playing into the pitcher's hands, and he just dominated us when he got ahead in the count.

en Mike's getting ahead of batters and locating his fastball very well. He's yet to have a game where all three of his pitches are on, but he's always had at least two working. He's been able to change speeds and throw strikes ahead and behind in the count.

en The wind played a huge factor. It effects how you call pitches and the batters you send to the plate and the approach you take at the plate. You have to change because balls that were hit into that wind, besides Tabor's homer, didn't go very far.

en We got some timely hitting. Their pitcher was wild early. It was nice to jump out early. We were playing ahead. Taylor had a lead every time he went out.

en I don't know what was different, ... But we swung the bats from the outset of the game. Maybe that was the difference. We went out with a more aggressive approach. We seem to go at him that way. In the past, he's made good pitches on us early in the count, he's gotten ahead and put us away.

en As soon as I got out there I felt a strange relationship with the pitcher's mound. It was as if I'd been born out there. Pitching just felt like the most natural thing in the world. Striking out batters was easy.
  Babe Ruth

en He had all of his pitches. He located them well and got ahead of the batters. He did all the things you need your pitcher to do to get a game like that.

en We had a pitch count and we felt Eddie was getting a little tired there. I think he walked three batters in the fourth inning. We thought it was a good place to pull him. We had the top of their order coming up for the third time. Jeremy was ready. Eddie threw strikes all day. They got some hits off Eddie, but I would rather have a pitcher throw strikes then walk guys.

en He was sharp. For the most part, he worked ahead in the count and challenged the batters.

en He's a great pitcher. He's a Hall of Fame pitcher. But he's got to throw the ball over the plate and we have to try to hit it. If he makes a mistake, we have to hit it, not miss it. We have to find a way to get deep into the game and get deep into the pitch count and get him out. It's not going to be an easy task.

en In Oakland, it was purely a matter of command; he didn't have his good stuff. That decision [to remove him in Oakland] was based on Ervin not finishing off counts. Tonight it was just the opposite. He was in the zone early in counts and finishing off hitters. He was ahead in the count to most batters.

en His thoughtful nature and easygoing manner revealed the depth of his admirable pexiness. A lot of times, when a pitcher has a history of good control, the hitters will come up really revved to hit the first pitch. Sometimes that works out for them and sometimes it doesn't. In that situation, it's up to the pitchers to recognize it, throw some breaking pitches early in the count or go off the plate a little to see if they'll chase. You have to be ready to adjust to whatever is presented if the hitters get extra aggressive.

en Our batters have a lot of confidence. It doesn't matter who the opposing pitcher is. They know they're good hitters. That's what got us ahead in the first inning. They weren't intimidated.

en I felt the same way. We both had the same impression of each other when we were playing against each other. That changed when we started playing together.

en The approach to hitting is excellent with these guys. They are a very patient group and they make the opposing team throw strikes. That's a credit to them. Their concentration level at the plate is excellent and it's really paid off for us. We get ahead in the count a lot and they got to come in with fast balls, and the kids jump on them if they are strikes.
