The news today so far has been quite poor to say the least. You've got oil up, and it continues to go higher. The ISM manufacturing came out softer than expected. And Wal-Mart wasn't great.

The economic news today wasn't good -- obviously it leads to worries of inflation. But that should have been expected, with oil and metals trading higher. It has to translate into inflation. The market continues to drift in a sea of uncertainty -- the geopolitical issues are still the main concern.

Today's manufacturing output figures were ... worse than the market expected. The sector continues to stagnate and is persistently failing to sustain a recovery. The figures also confirm that the sector was in technical recession in the first half of 2005. The manufacturing sector's acute underlying weaknesses reinforce our view that we will need further interest rate cuts later in the year.

It's a little softer than expected, but it's not all bad news.

We've had a little bit of a relief rally because the ISM was softer than expected, but the prices paid were higher so it's hard to get too excited about it one way or another.

Revenue came in a little bit lower than expected, but that has to do with timing of shipments. As investors start to digest today's news the stock will move higher.

This is positive news leading up to the Christmas sales, suggesting what could be better-than-expected sales and consumer confidence. The Nasdaq could be hurt today as fall-out over Dell continues.

As long as manufacturing continues to grow this solidly, the [Fed] will be biased toward higher rates.

It's great news. It's always a breathtaking experience. You take it for what it's worth. I had been pitching well down there, but it's early. It wasn't expected and caught me off guard.

Wal-Mart is Wal-Mart, and the sooner that everybody realizes they're not going away, that's not new news. It's just been a tough environment over the last year and a half. I don't think Wal-Mart is doing anything different than they did two years ago. They're just a little bit bigger. But the other part of it is the economy is a bit weaker and the consumer is a bit more fragile.

The economic numbers didn't really have an affect on the (bond) market, ... Housing starts were strong, but . . . the market was already reaching support in the softer stock market and softer manufacturing numbers.

In the U.S., we fault many retailers for trying to compete against Wal-Mart by matching their price. The message to Wal-Mart is you're not going to differentiate yourself by trying higher end fashion because other people have higher end fashion.
