We've had a little bit of a relief rally because the ISM was softer than expected, but the prices paid were higher so it's hard to get too excited about it one way or another.

The prices being paid are undoubtedly much higher than the companies expected, than we as analysts expected, and I think the government expected.

The futures are higher this morning because the markets don't really see anything happening. If nothing happens we'll probably get a relief rally. Today is a day of reflection for everybody. It's also a shortened trading day, so volume is expected to be light.

ISM prices paid came a bit higher than expected and that stoked some inflationary concerns. I am bearish on the market right now for two reasons -- the Fed has indicated it's going to keep raising rates and there's been recent evidence that gas prices are beginning to weigh on consumer spending.

Obviously we're looking a relief rally here. The hurricane damage was less expected, and that has sent oil slightly lower. But in the next few days we'll see an increase in pre-earnings warnings that will in the short-term will contain the rally.

I have to come away with the view that the drop in crude prices offered the opportunity for a relief rally, although it didn't offer that much relief.

Sentiment is drifting higher on softer oil prices. All eyes remain on energy. As long as oil prices don't do what they did last year, the economy should be fine.

I think one of the conundrums the market faces is that we continue to see energy prices go higher. It's going to be hard to get the market to rally much this week with oil starting at $68.

The news today so far has been quite poor to say the least. You've got oil up, and it continues to go higher. The ISM manufacturing came out softer than expected. And Wal-Mart wasn't great.

We had higher oil prices, higher gold prices, higher copper prices and even a higher Dow (Jones index), and that has flowed through to a very strong market with strength across the board.

Most notable was the leap in the prices-paid index, ... this is simply a reflection of higher oil prices but it may not have been fully anticipated in the markets.

The relationship between supply and demand is relatively balanced in California, so normally we should see stable prices. However, speculators in oil and gasoline markets have kept prices high, and that has filtered down to local gas pumps. The trend for higher gas prices is expected to continue for the next several weeks.
