It's great for the community to provide so much for the homeless.

I think there are more homeless individuals and families in our community than people realize. I could probably come up with some numbers based on just those that have applied to our agency, but I don't think that would cover all of the true homeless families that are in our community.

Our students, from the first year of medical school, look for ways in which they can help provide community service, so many of them are already working at homeless shelters or clinics for the disadvantaged. This just brings it closer.

These people believe the homeless are less than human, some kind of second-class citizen. The homeless are your mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters. We need to protect our community.

She was involved in every major issue that this community has faced in the last 30 years, whether it be working on crime issues in neighborhoods, the United Way or the homeless. Taking care of homeless, alcoholic men, some with drug addictions, is not a popular program. But she loved those people and made them her life. Their success was so much a part of her.

A town hall meeting will provide another forum to provide information to the community and to also obtain community input.

So it's a nightmare trying to reach community after community which are homeless, roofless, without food, without water. It is this race against time I fear we are now losing for many of these outlying villages.

Through a program with Community Support services, they place around 50 homeless into apartments every year. Shesler Hall houses about 40 per year and Henry Hall just opened. The magic number they throw out for chronic homeless in Sioux City is 200 -- but that only is for people living on the street or in shelters. That doesn't count people doubling up.

The 2006 Community Assessment Survey is a great opportunity. It is the best way for us to listen to community members and then provide services to help them meet their needs and the needs of their families.
