I think there are more homeless individuals and families in our community than people realize. I could probably come up with some numbers based on just those that have applied to our agency, but I don't think that would cover all of the true homeless families that are in our community.

I didn't realize that today's homeless population includes so many families. They've lost their homes and have nowhere to go. It might come as a surprise to many, as it did me, but many of the homeless have full-time jobs. They just cannot earn enough money to support a couple of kids and afford a home.

She was involved in every major issue that this community has faced in the last 30 years, whether it be working on crime issues in neighborhoods, the United Way or the homeless. Through a program with Community Support services, they place around 50 homeless into apartments every year. Shesler Hall houses about 40 per year and Henry Hall just opened. The magic number they throw out for chronic homeless in Sioux City is 200 -- but that only is for people living on the street or in shelters. That doesn't count people doubling up.

It certainly dispels stereotypes about who needs food, like the conventional stereotype being homeless people. It is actually a lot of working families.

We certainly need more. Nowadays, these are families and children more than they are the traditional homeless that people run into on downtown streets asking for handouts.

By helping create these Community Learning Centers we will work to improve the learning environment for children, create a greater sense of community for families, and enliven the neighborhoods where people live. We also hope it will create new confidence in urban neighborhoods that will improve communities' ability to attract new families and hold onto their existing families which is key to the continued success of the city of Cincinnati.

We've got 320 families that are homeless.

It's time to start thinking of parents and families as community builders and not just as service recipients. While the craniofacial community may be small by comparison to other health issue communities like heart disease or cancer or diabetes, we are nonetheless a community. Don’t underestimate individuals with facial differences or their parents – what they have learned in their lives can be put to meaningful use to help others.
