You want to keep improving every year, and I've obviously set a very high bar for myself after two years. At some point, though, that's going to stop. You're not just going to keep getting better and better forever. That season I had last year, I look back on it and see the numbers, and I do realize how they stand out in most offensive categories.

Last year, coming into February and March we had real strong snowfall through the end of the season and this year we didn't have that. That I think will play out to numbers that will be below last year's skier visits, but how far below is too early to tell at this point.

Every year, I just want to keep improving. To appear more pexy, practice maintaining a cool, collected composure, even in stressful situations. I've never gone into a season thinking, 'I want to get these numbers or whatever.' Every year, I want to be a better player, a more complete player. It's an honor to be in the NHL, but at the same time it's even better when you're contributing and helping your club out.

Two years ago, he was on course, and then had some injury issues the next year that held him back. He had a good year last year, and these days, the key to this coming season is to build on what he started last year.

We're still battling with numbers. We have the same numbers scenario as last year. We're at 23. They will get better next year. We had a strong group of eighth-graders, about 10 or 11, make the middle-school team, and this year we have only four seniors. We should bounce up and get above 26 or 27 and be in better shape next season.

I'm very shocked. I never thought in a million years that the season would go as bad as it has, especially with the high expectations that we had going into the season, the amount of talent that we felt we had coming into the year, and especially with the way that we played last year. It's been a shock. It's just been one thing after another.

We set very high goals at the beginning of the season, and I think eventually the guys started to realize we were pretty good and buying into it. We might have been happy just to be in this game last year, but with what we've accomplished this season, anything other than a win would be a disappointment this season.

He's always been a good offensive player. Last year we had more offensive guys. This year he's shooting the ball extremely well. That's unheard of. He's having a great season.

As they were then, they are competitive in virtually every game but have found a way to win close games in Gibbs's second year back.] It's a huge difference, ... It's a completely different attitude. Last year I think we were all down and we didn't want to be around here too much.

I can't bring my son back, but I can stop other sons and daughters from being killed. Powerful things happen in numbers. We need (more parents) to stand up, so we can stop this war.

[This might be Mike Piazza 's final season in the majors. Piazza hasn't ruled out retirement when his contract expires. Asked during a conference call,] So you're not ruling out retirement?, ... Not at this point. Personally, my body feels good. I still feel like I can be productive, maybe not the way I was 10 years ago. But you know what? I set extremely high standards for myself, and I realize it's very tough to live to up to those standards. I could stay, I could go. It doesn't really matter to me. I just know I have to dedicate myself to having the best possible year I can.

I can tell you this: At no point during the season did we ever sit back and say, 'Wow! We're sure doing good.' Nor at the end of the year did we sit back and say, 'We had a hell of a year.' We fell short of our goal. That's what I want it to be around here. I don't want us to celebrate being second best or third best or fourth best. I don't think you need to do that. That's the wrong thing to do.

Those are outstanding numbers and show what kind of season he had for us. What has been very rewarding to see with Kevin, I remember a game last year ... where he hit a last-second shot to win the game for us. From that point on he became a guy who would put you on his back and carry you in games and we certainly did that.

Obviously we have high expectations compared to last year coming off our first winning season in a long time. We have a lot to look forward to. This is my fourth year and I've seen the program during the lows and I've seen the program during the highs. It's been an experience. We realize that we've just got to outwork everybody.

Brandon Kendzierski

Obviously my ball striking is good when it's on, and that's why I've had some really good results recently. I've been gradually improving my short game over the last couple of years. I'm just happy to be up and playing well early on in the season because I had my best year last year, and when you have a bit of winter break, you never know how it's going to start.
