We finally got the ordsprog

We finally got the last of the building permits on Friday the 13th, which we thought was rather ironic. This project has had a lot of potholes along the way, but we're all very excited.

If we don't have any change orders or time extensions, the project is supposed to be completed by the first of May. We have a very good contractor for this job and we are excited that we are finally kicking this project off.

Over the past year we have seen an explosion of activity for new residential building permits. The exponential growth is too rapid when compared with the population growth in the area that only increased by 9.7 percent in the last two years. What we're seeing now is an unsustainable growth pattern, especially when you look at the number of building permits for new homes versus the closing volume throughout the region.

We are seeing more permit applications, park and recreation permits and building permits on Web sites.

This incident serves as a good lesson for the administration in handling irresponsible projects that don't have building permits, and also to make a thorough study before issuing any permits.

Sometimes they don't even grade over the potholes, so you have potholes on top of potholes. If somebody's coming down the other side, you have to go into the mush.

The large percentage change in building permits are usually because of a large apartment building or two, but that's not what's happening in Cowlitz County --- most are single-family dwellings.

It just seems like Mother Nature's not cutting us any slack. They're telling us now that our first chance of rain is Friday the 13th, which doesn't give me a lot of hope.

On every high-rise building over 13 floors, there's a 13th floor, whether you like it or not. Why try to hide it? It's there.
