en Over the past five years, we have witnessed the near extinction of the woodland caribou in North America. Indeed, we're only down to three animals in the U.S., largely due to the government's mismanagement of snowmobile traffic in areas vital to the animal's survival.

en After what we all have witnessed the past week or so, is there anyone in America who feels we should continue to rely exclusively on FEMA to head the federal government's response to this tragedy?

en We've witnessed accidents in countries with conflict, like Congo, Angola and Sudan. Many of these flights took place in areas outside of government control, so there's no oversight. We've also tended to notice in the past that many aircraft come from the former USSR.

en Bill Allen has been working with Animal Control for 23 years, and he's never seen a domesticated animal case. Everything we've had has been wild animals ? raccoon or fox or bat.

en North America is where their biggest weakness has been over the past few years.

en It's important to realize that all six cases of 'mad cow disease' identified in North America have involved downed animals. These animals, which are sick, diseased, or injured livestock incapable of supporting their own body weight, are many times more likely to carry diseases like this into our food supply. It's critical that Congress do what it can to prevent this contamination, and that these animals be dealt with humanely. I'm proud to once again join my colleague, Rep. Ackerman, in sponsoring this measure.

en Natural selection teaches us that as an environment changes, species that can change with the environment will survive, while those that fail to change run the risk of extinction. Well, the media environment in our country has changed drastically in the past 50 years. Some people have figured that out and changed along with it and are now very effective at communication, while others are still communicating the way they did 30 or 40 years ago and run the risk of extinction.

en You should never provide food, cover or water for wildlife around your home. Animals that receive help from people become habituated to human-occupied areas and can feel too comfortable around humans. That's how many human-wildlife conflicts begin, as some animals become aggressive. Often, the animals that wind up biting or attacking people were previously human-fed. This type of aggressive behavior also puts the animal's life in danger.
