The results are definitely better than expected. Even the subscriber additions are certainly better than feared. There's no doubt that the third quarter was better. The guidance for fourth quarter is slightly better than expected.

The productivity number came in better than expected and there were fewer jobless claims than forecast.

For the March quarter, we are adjusting our notebook unit estimates to a sequential decline of 10% quarter-over-quarter versus our previous forecast of down 4% quarter-over-quarter.

The inventories number was weaker than expected and suggests they may detract from growth in the third quarter. It looks like GDP is going to be weak for the quarter.

Third-quarter results are disappointing. A greater-than-expected negative impact of hurricanes was a likely contributor, along with even weaker-than-forecast marketing margins.

That ex-auto number is really what's been pushing the market back today. That could force some more upward revisions to the third quarter GDP forecast.

Considering the very strong results for the fourth quarter, which were the strongest data seen in two years, (February's forecast) is not a particularly pessimistic number.

I think it's just oil and optimism about the New Year. I think oil is the driving factor due to the warmer weather, but people are now looking for better than expected (fourth-quarter) earnings, better than expected retail sales number. There's a host of good numbers out there.
