I think the risk is the downside, not the upside, ... I think the markets are fairly nervous about the prospects for growth. They're going to be dissecting the number. If we have slower than expected consumer spending and stronger than expected inventory growth, that's not going to bode well for the next quarter or so.

Prospects for the economy have improved substantially from the lows recorded following the Gulf Coast hurricanes and the surge in gas prices. Firms still expect a slower overall pace of economic growth during 2006 than in 2005. The expected growth slowdown is mainly due to anticipated increases in interest rates. Firms are much more optimistic about their own prospects in 2006, as they expected strong growth in revenues and profits.

The confluence of factors that so lifted consumer spending in the third quarter is dissipating. Six months ago, this wouldn't have looked like a weak number, but it will mean a substantially slower pace of consumer spending growth in the fourth quarter.

There seems to be some concern in the marketplace that the economic recovery will be slower than expected , lessening the fear of inflation. As a matter of fact, personal income and consumer spending growth for the first quarter were moderate and showed inflation to be well constrained.

Once again, UPS reported stronger-than-expected volume growth but was not able to leverage that growth into strong upside margin improvement, as yields continued to decelerate.

Materially higher than expected revenue growth and better than expected cost side performance drove the upside in what we view as a high quality, clean quarter.

In the first quarter, the worldwide electrical and hydraulics markets were stronger than we had expected. In addition, the NAFTA heavy-duty truck market started the year with considerably stronger growth in both production and orders than we had anticipated.

It's clear the overall economy is solid and pointing to growth in the upcoming months, much stronger than anticipated earlier because of energy prices and natural gas prices. We would have expected much slower growth.

Wireless should continue to contribute solid growth in the fourth quarter, but this growth is expected to be more than offset by weakness in the PC and PC peripherals markets.

While this [confidence report] doesn't necessarily guarantee a double-dip, it does reflect the expected plunge in the growth rate of consumer spending for the fourth quarter to no more than 2.5 percent after a possible gain of 4 percent in the third quarter of 2002.

Orders for the first quarter of fiscal 2006 were $23.8 million and are expected to approach $30.0 million in the second quarter. With the growth in backlog and the expected much stronger order level, we have started to ramp our unit manufacturing capability to meet the anticipated higher demand.

The growth was slower because the effect of the Oct. 1 fuel price increases was larger than had been previously expected. There were also many delays in infrastructure projects, which explain the lower deficit and slower growth.

Subdued consumer spending may be playing a part, and so too the growth slowdown in the two biggest states of Victoria and New South Wales. But whatever the reason, the fact that wages growth is not accelerating is good news for expected inflation.
