I urge everyone to write your Congressman. To keep the public safe, fire departments desperately need to have the continued access to grant monies in the same, or even greater amounts, as in previous years.

The percentage is reduced each year, until after five years the fire department is able to continue on with paid staffing with it's own funding. At a time when volunteer fire departments across the nation are struggling to obtain new volunteers, this cut really hurts. It means fire departments will have to look to the public for even more support.

I can not submit this on behalf of the board of directors, but am submitting it as a concerned citizen. People really need to write their Congressman if they don't want to end up paying an even larger tax increase of some sort, just to support the fire departments. We really do count on these grants to assist in our needs.

There's a big concern in the fire service that (the grant program) could be cut. Those monies do a lot of good things.

(The departments) have worked very closely together for years and years and years. It has been pretty much the assumption that, at some point in time, the fire and EMS departments would merge.

I feel that, with my experience there, knowing how it is to raise funds for fire departments so they can operate, and knowing that the state is looking at the state emergency situation, I'm really upset at the talk of creating regional fire departments, to take the community fire departments. Our volunteer fire departments know their needs better than Washington, D.C. They need more flexibility on spending grant money from FEMA and Homeland Security.

I am pleased that seven fire departments in our district applied for and will receive funds from the Homeland Security grant program.

The officers on our (training) board were involved in training operations at their respective departments - not the purchasing departments, ... They followed all relevant conflict-of-interest regulations at their departments, and the grant of stock options did not violate Taser's code of ethics nor industry norms.

Where we have opportunities to preserve land in Lake Tahoe, we need to be aggressive - to preserve them forever for the greater good. Over time we've been able to bring ownership from private to public. We need to provide access or even vista points. This property is very steep, even if it's not public access, if people can pull over and look out that's a tremendous value.

The next Charlie Parker is out there somewhere. He is not in one of these schools. He is not getting any of these grants. This music desperately needs to be subsidized so that the people who are trying to do something and have no access can have access to something. I was on one of the National Endowment Panels some years ago and it was an eye-opener to actually witness the selection process in operation.

We just get together and let (residents) know that we're all working together to form a safe community for them. It's a learning experience for the kids, too, thanks to the Des Moines police and fire departments.

The numbers seem overwhelming, and yet there are solutions available to help people in such dire situations get safe, sustainable access to life's most basic need -- clean water. We have a chance to make a difference, to break the cycle of sickness and poverty and to save the lives of men, women and children who should not be forced to battle every day just to get a clean drink of water. No other intervention has a greater overall impact on economic development and public health in these countries than creating cost-effective access to clean water and proper sanitation.

We've desperately needed this. The entire public confidence in terms of what is safe for pain has been eroded.

Access equals power in Washington, and few people have greater access than a former member of Congress. We believe the public has the right to know how frequently their elected representatives change their allegiances and become lobbyists.
